Breaking the Hunger Cycle!

On October 16th
2024, the NSS unit of the College of Agriculture came together to observe the
World Food Day, a united call to action against hunger, malnutrition, and food
insecurity. The program was proudly organized, presented and conducted by team
‘Agastya’ of the NSS unit.
The program
commenced with a ceremonial flag-hoisting ceremony, where the chief guest, Dr.
Udaykumar Nidoni, unfurled the NSS flag, symbolizing the scheme’s commitment to
community service. The chief guest, along with other distinguished guests, the
Dean of the college and the NSS program officers, was escorted to the venue due
protocol. Setting the tone for the event, the NSS song sung with enthusiasm by
the volunteers, added to the patriotic fervor, marking the commencement of the
World Food Day celebration.
The program was
held in the college’s seminar hall, providing an ideal setting for meaningful
decisions. The event was officially inaugurated with a symbolic gesture of
watering a plant, emphasizing growth an empowerment.
To commence the
proceedings, the participants took a solemn oath on the occasion, reaffirming
their commitment to eradicating hunger and malnutrition.
The students
delivered insightful and thought evoking speeches, both in English and Kannada,
highlighting the significance of the day and its relevance to global food
security. The theme of this year’s World Food Day; “RIGHT TO FOOD FOR A BETTER LIFE AND A BETTER FUTURE” was especially
highlighted by the students to convey the importance of food and why it is
necessary.
The chief guest
of the event, Dr. Udaykumar Nidoni, Professor and University head Dept. Of
Processing and food engineering, UAS Raichur, shared valuable expertise and
perspectives on sustainable food systems and the right to nutritious food. It
was very delightful to have heard him share his opinions in a way no one else
could.
The Dean, who
was also the President of the event, along with the esteemed professors, who
made the program a huge success with their support and presence, further
elucidated the importance of collective action in addressing food insecurity,
importance of a balanced diet and problems of food wastage.
The Dean,
felicitated the chief guest as a token of appreciation for taking some of his
valuable time of to come and make our event a success with his presence.
A very much notable highlight of the program
was a thought provoking exhibition done by the students, showcasing innovative
models incorporating vegetables and fruits along with informative charts which
added an interactive dimension to the World Food Day celebration.
The World Food Day program concluded
with a heartfelt vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to the chief guest,
dignitaries, and participants. The success of the event reflected the College’s
and most importantly the NSS unit’s dedication to promoting sustainable food
systems and eradicating hunger and in providing service to the people and
community as a whole.
Thus the program
laid the groundwork for continued advocacy and action reaffirming the NSS unit’s
commitment to community service and social responsibility.
